Criteria Based Job Description and Performance Standards

Position Title:
Medical Assistant, Med Tech, Radiology Tech or Lab Tech

Supervised by:
Provider of the shift, Executive Director

Job Summary

This individual is responsible for preparing the patient for the physician exam and assisting the physician in the performance of the patient examination and/or diagnostic and procedural services. The medical assistant will also be expected to participate in overall office operations as it relates to patient registration, billing and collections as delegated by the Executive Director.

Primary Job Duties/Essential Functions

  • When announcement made that there is a patient ready, immediately go to lobby and escort patient to clinic area and place them in appropriate room.
  • Prepare the patient for physician examination. Takes and records vital signs, general appearance. Notes the chief complaint and history of present illness elements in keeping with documentation guidelines. Ensures the completion of the review of systems form for each patient for use by the provider. Assists in documenting patient past, family, and social history.
  • Inform the provider ASAP if the patient has shortness of breath, chest pains or anything else that may require 911.
  • Assists the physician with examinations and procedures as required.
  • Records unusual conditions/limitations of the exams and/or procedures as well as assisting in physician documentation of time components.
  • If appropriately credentialed, takes patient x-rays as ordered by provider.
  • Performs phlebotomy services; collects, prepares and processes samples to all contracted laboratories if labs need to be sent out.
  • Ensures the accuracy of diagnostic coding provided to the laboratory as to the medical necessity of tests performed.
  • Provides appropriate tests in our moderately complex lab, following all guidelines
  • Maintains stock in and cleans all exam and treatment rooms.
  • Administer vaccinations, PPD’s, other IM Medications under the supervision of an MD, PA or ARNP.
  • Participate in pulmonary function testing, EKG administration, start IVs, audiometric testing and visual acuity testing.
  • Assist provider with certain procedures such as lacerations, ear irrigations, gynecological concerns, etc.
  • Participate in patient call-back/follow up phone calls under the guidance of the provider for that day.
  • Reviews all incoming reports with appropriate office member and scans or has scanned in to patient medical record. Distributes medical records as appropriate to physician or other staff member.
  • Calls patients with lab and procedural reports when directed by the provider. Orders prescriptions for patient after and only with authorization by the provider.
  • Goes over discharge instructions with patients.
  • Documents ALL interactions with ALL patients and other agencies in the medical record in keeping with appropriate professional standards of documentation. Signs all documentation by indicating initial of first name, full last name, and job title.
  • Performs inventory and maintains adequate clinical supplies.
  • Maintains patient education materials and keeps adequate supplies in stock in appropriate areas of the office.
  • Covers for all staff positions, as required, to insure appropriate office staffing to meet the needs of patients and office operations.
  • Ensures office compliance with CLIA and OSHA regulations working in conjunction with provider.
  • Maintains up to date knowledge of office automation. Performs punctual and accurate data entry of appropriate clinical data.
  • Prepares medications for patients (if filling here) as directed by provider.
  • Ensure that clinic area is kept clean and spotless (including but not limited to: taking trash to dumpster, cleaning all counters and shelves, mopping floors).
  • Every morning quality control laboratory equipment and record in log books.
  • Keep a record of all labs being sent to Florida Pathology.
  • Perform in house labs, record on paper, tell provider results and record in Docutap.
  • Autoclave
  • Quality control for any new box of strep/mono/flu, etc and record it in log book.
  • Produce quality x-rays for the providers.
  • Suggest additional views to providers if necessary.
  • Radiation protection shield for patients and confirm patient not pregnant
  • Order and keep log for film badge reports.
  • Log book parents holding child for x-ray.
  • Clean x-ray cassettes and plates for quality control.
  • Clean scanner for quality control.
  • Call Vistek if there is a problem with the equipment that staff can not solve.
  • Order new x-ray supplies if needed.
  • Make sure x-ray room is clean at all times.
  • Transfer disks for patients or Florida Radiology Imaging as needed.
  • Performs other duties as required.
